DHCP, a service for assigning IP addresses automatically, can ben a very useful but risky tool. Rent-A-Lan offers several services to guarantee the functioning of DHCP in a network.

Why use DHCP?
  • When there is one (authoritative) DHCP in the network, the clients will always receive the correct settings that are needed. That way you can ‘force’ the clients to use certain settings. For example, when clients receive the settings for Netbios-name-servers (or WINS), all clients will use these servers, which will reduce some broadcast in the network.
  • Ease for the clients. The client can configure his or her network more easily (instead of having to enter the settings manually). Less problems can occur for the client while configuring.
  • DNS updates. The DHCP daemon can automatically update the DNS server with entries based on the machinename of the client.
  • When using Option-82, the DHCP daemon can save (or use) information about where the client connects from.

DHCP-snooping
The functioning of a DHCP server can be endangered when a Rogue (unwanted) DHCP server is present. DHCP-snooping from HP ProCurve completely resolves this problem. Rent-A-Lan uses DHCP-snooping to guarantee the functioning of the DHCP-server.

Option-82
HP ProCurve switches can pass through information to the DHCP-server about where in the network a client connectes from. Rent-A-Lan can configure the DHCP-server in a certain way that it will give out leases according to the location of the client. Also, the correct DNS entries can be created using this information.
